Tour of Generals Game Update Log

10-28-2009 - I've shuffled around some sites and pooled some server resources so that Tour of Generals doesn't have to carry the full burden of expensive server costs all by itself. I'm still planning on reworking a number of areas in ToG for an upcoming version 2 but while we wait I've decided to open the game back up to the public.
- I've added extra subscription time to players who previously subscribed to the game to compensate for the downtime.

5-17-2009
- Updated the layout on the player profile screen. The updated screen now includes 3 graph charts that track player progress. Players can also upload an avatar via their profile screen. Avatars are clickable for a larger view.

5-16-2009
- Added Hungary and Madagascar game maps.

5-13-2009
- Signups have started for first officially sanctioned Tour of Generals tournament. The winner of the tournament gets at free $10 subscription and the 'Tournament Winner' badge added to their player profile. If you would like to participate in the tournament read the rules and sign up here.

5-4-2009
- Added Ukraine and Wyoming game maps. The Wyoming map was added because of the states unique square layout with mostly evenly distributed territories.

4-20-2009
- Added Argentina and Greece game maps.

4-3-2009
- Enabled 1 minute turns for subscribers. Enabled 3 and 4 minute turns for non-subscribers.

4-2-2009
- Added 3 new player map awards for conquering Europe, Russia, and Oceania. Added a new award for winning King of the Hill flavored games. Stats for these new awards begin from this point moving forward.

3-16-2009
- Hill Holder is a new feature of King of the Hill games. The player that holds the hill until the countdown to victory timer runs out can then claim victory. The default time in turns to hold the hill is 5 consecutive turns but this value increases the closer to the hill that a player starts the game. The value also increases based on the Movement Range modification for the game. If a player captures the hill from another player the countdown timer starts over. The countdown timer can be found on the hill region on both the Map Overview mouse over and Tactical Map info window. It is the hill holder's responsibility to claim victory when the timer runs out otherwise someone else can capture the hill and the game continues. The 3x hill bonus is still in effect. This update will affect active King of the Hill games once a player captures the hill moving forward.

3-14-2009
- King of the Hill has been added as a new game flavor. King of the Hill games are played just like Standard flavor games except here every game map has a preset King of the Hill region. These King of the Hill regions are worth 3x their normal value therefore by controlling the hill you greatly increase your chances of achieving victory. Because King of the Hill regions are a such prized regions they will most likely be a hot spot for battles in the game. King of the Hill regions may not be selected as a starting region.

3-13-2009
- Added Central America and Oceania game maps.
- Modified the equation for game points in order to give more weight to games with a higher number of players. A game with 10 players will now earn more points than a game with just 2 players. The equation has changed from  [50 + (Frequency * 0.3)]  to  [50 + (Frequency * 0.1) + (Opponents * 25)].
- Map Balance: The Canada and Cuba maps have been updated for better game balance. The Eastern regions of Canada and Northern regions of Cuba have received higher region values and higher bonus percentages than they had before.

3-11-2009
- Added a Russia game map. Similar to the World Maps, Russia is broken up into so many regions that I picked only the top 60 largest regions as playable regions.
- Map Balance: The Portugal game map default movement range has been reduced. The new Indonesia and Hong Kong maps have received minor adjustments to region values.

3-10-2009
- Added Hong Kong and Indonesia game maps.
- Added some additional game turn times such as 4 minutes, 8 minutes, 45 minutes, 4 hours, etc...
- Upgraded the tactical map to allow for mouse wheel zooming, an updated zoom and scroll controller that appears on the left side of the map, and an overview map that appears in the bottom right of the tactical map. (The overview map can be minimized)
- Corrected a few bugs regarding player awards. If you notice that you are missing an award in the game that you are sure that you've earned please report the problem in the bug reports section of the forums.

3-4-2009
- Get active on the forums and earn a free $5 or $10 game subscription to your in-game player account. See this forum thread for more details.

2-28-2009
- A new top navigation menu has been added to the game which should reduce clutter and help everyone find what they are looking for a little easier. If you have any thoughts or suggestions for the new navigation menu please share them in the forums.

2-16-2008
- An issue with the leader awards was causing players to not receive the award when they had an army of 500 strength or higher. The issue has been corrected however this fix will only apply moving forward. If you previously had a large army but did not receive the leader award you'll need to make a new large army to get the award.

2-13-2009
- You can now drag enemy units on the map so as to help you identify unit stacks better. Dragging a unit does not move it's real tactical position on the map. This change is for visual reference only so be advised that if you move an enemy unit on the map be sure to put it back where you found it so that your tactical decisions are based on the enemy's real position.

1-29-2009
- A major update to the clan system has been released. As a result everyone's clan has been reset. Apologies for the inconvenience. With the new clan system the President is the only one who has access to edit and delete the clan. The Vice President is next in line to take over the clan if the President steps down. Vice Presidents and Presidents can all approve members and make bulletins. Clan Secretaries can only post bulletins. Regular members can view bulletins. Pending application members cannot view bulletins and do not count towards the clan statistic records.
- The region information screen for game maps , for example the World Map, now includes a preview of the tactical map.

1-26-2009
- Team games have been made available for premium accounts to host.

1-25-2009
- Team games are coming soon. In team games you'll be able to select between 1 of 5 teams to play on before the game launches. During game play you'll work in cooperation with your team mates. You won't be able to attack your team mates or capture their territories. You'll be able to chat in secret with your team members (or taunt other teams) via a new 'Select Team' option in the chat box. Victory can be achieved by a single player reaching the game's victory condition and claiming a team victory or by a single team capturing all regions controlled by other teams and then claiming a team victory. Team victories will award each team member the standard 50 points for the win and there will soon be a new 'Team Wins' and 'Team Losses' column on each player profile screen where team wins and team losses will be recorded. In order to keep team games competitive the transfer of units and money among team members will not be allowed.

1-23-2009
- Added the New World game map. The New World is just like the regular World game map except that Western Hemisphere regions like the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, etc.. cannot be player starting locations and they are 50% more valuable than on the regular World map.

1-20-2009
- We've had a number of players using certain settings in their games only to inflate their player records. This underhanded game play is not competitive and is not in the best interest of Tour of Generals so a few changes have been made:

  • Game hosts will no longer have the ability to turn starting immunity off.
  • The winner of games that do not last at least one acquired turn will not receive any points for winning that game or any points for region captures before the first acquired turn.
  • The head start options above 1 have been removed.
- Added 40 Player Awards that the game will begin tracking starting today. The game will only track awards achieved starting today.

1-19-2009
- For a limited time the World game map will be available to host by standard Tour of Generals accounts.

1-18-2009
- Added Iran and Mexico game maps.

1-17-2009
- If a game host changes the game settings before launch all players will not be put into pending status to allow them to approve the changes. This is to prevent underhanded tactics through last second changes to the game settings before launching the game.

1-16-2009
- Added New Zealand and Brazil game maps.
- Added a World game map. Please note that not all countries in the world are active regions on the map because that would put too many markers on the map.

1-15-2009
- Changed the Starting Immunity option to only prevent the capture of player starting regions. Neutral regions and non player starting regions may now be captured while Starting Immunity is on.
- Quarter turns are available again for games under 5 minutes.
- Game frequency rates of 1.5 minutes is available again for premium accounts.

1-12-2009
- The traffic flood from the weekend is starting to slow down so I've added back 5 minute turns for free player accounts.
- Added a new game option that allows game hosts to specify whether or not capturing regions should be free or consume game turns.

1-10-2009
- We're getting a huge flood of players from CN now and this is putting a lot of stress on the servers. During this time of very high traffic premium accounts will be limited to host games with a fast turn frequency of 3 minute turns and free accounts will be limited to host games with a fast turn frequency of 10 minute turns.

1-7-2009
- Added an option called 'Starting Immunity' which is an option that prevents the capture of player controlled starting regions during the first turns in the game in order to give all players a fair starting chance to start the game. Game hosts can set 1, 2, or 3 turns of immunity or 0 turns to disable Starting Immunity.
- Added Spain and Scotland game maps.

1-4-2009
- Added a number of new game maps including Japan, Cuba, Netherlands, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, and Sweden. Additional maps of Spain, Brazil, Scotland, Mexico, and Iran game maps will be added in the coming weeks.

1-1-2009
- With a successful round of alpha testing and the arrival of the new year the game has now moved from alpha testing to public beta. Game features and settings will continue to be updated and tweaked while we are in beta.

12-5-2008
- Added time zones to allow users to select their local time zone so that time displays in the game will be accurate for each user. To select your local time zone visit your player profile screen.

12-4-2008
- A number of new options for the games have been added to give players more options when playing. The new updates include the following:

  • Movement Modify: - The movement range on the tactical map in the game can be modified with this option. A negative number in this setting reduces the default movement range. A positive number in this setting increases the default movement range.
  • Head Start: - The head start option allows game hosts to specify a head start turn provided to all players at the start of a game. This allows players to collect funds and move units at the initial launch of a game.
  • Unit Movement: - The unit movement setting specifies the turn consumption value for unit actions. If this option is set to Half Turns then moving a unit on the map will consume half of a turn and therefore players can perform twice as many unit actions per full game turn. If this option is set to Full Turns then moving a unit on the map will consume one full turn. Quarter Turns consume one quarter of a turn.
  • Attack Turn Cost: - The attack turn cost setting specifies whether attacking another unit consumes a game turn. If this option is set to Free Attacks then units can attack other units without using any game turns.
  • Transfer Turn Cost: - The transfer turn cost setting specifies whether unit transfers consumes a game turn. If this option is set to Free Transfers then players can transfer units without using any game turns.
  • Game Description: - The game description allows game hosts to describe their game. This field is limited to 300 characters.
